Old Blog/New Blog - This Blog is deprecated

May 13th, 2009

Migrating the blog proved to be remarkably easy - managed to move all posts and comments via the export/import functionality contained within wordpress. This Blob is now thus deprecated. For future postings please go to:

So this is the first component to fully move to source forge infrastructure.

Moving to Source Forge

May 13th, 2009

In accordance with our attempt to move more into an open development project mode we will gradually be moving most of our infrastructure to a neutral third party - in this instance SourceForge - and re-purposing some of the infrastructure we keep. One of the first things we hope that will migrate will be this blog but we shall keep you informed of the progress, either through this blog or its successor. For the time being we have a SourceForge project account at:

Note that this will be a gradual process. We hope to have completed this process by October 2009.

New Release (v0.1) of the JDBC Driver for OGSA-DAI

May 11th, 2009

Mathias Brito, a member of the Laboratory of Architecture and High Performance Computing at the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, is proud to announce the immediate availability of the first stable version (0.1) of his JDBC Driver for OGSA-DAI.

This JDBC driver provides Java programers with the ability to access relational databases exposed through grids using the OGSA-DAI middleware. The driver and documentation can be downloaded from:

If you download the software and try it out please report any bugs or issues  at here. Mathias is still looking for volunteers with the development of the driver so if you are keen please get in touch with him.

Mini User Group Meeting

May 4th, 2009

EU Internet of Services meeting, 11 June, Brussels

In conjunction with the EU Data Management collaborative working group we’ll be holding a mini OGSA-DAI User Group meeting on the afternoon of 11th June in Brussels.

Part of the EU-wide Internet of Services 2009 meeting, the Data Management working group session is open to European framework projects and others interested in forming collaborative links in the area of data management, particularly data management in a service-oriented environment. This particular session will have a strong technical focus on OGSA-DAI, including presentations from a number of key user projects and a talk on the 2009-2010 roadmap for OGSA-DAI.

DILS 2009

May 1st, 2009

6th International Workshop on Data Integration in the Life Sciences

20th-22nd July 2009

http://www.cs.manchester.ac.uk/DILS09

The development and increasingly widespread deployment of high throughput experimental methods in the life sciences is giving rise to numerous large, complex and valuable data resources. This foundation of experimental data underpins the systematic study of organisms and diseases, which increasingly depend on the development of models of biological systems. The development of these models often requires integration of diverse experimental data resources; once constructed, the models themselves become data and present new integration challenges for tasks such as interpretation, validation and comparison.

OGSA-DAI - from open source product to open source project

April 23rd, 2009

Since 2002, the OGSA-DAI project has been developing OGSA-DAI - its unique open source product for access to and integration of distributed heterogeneous data resources. We have now received from EPSRC funding for an additional year’s work, until April 2010.

A key part of our work over the next year will be to evolve OGSA-DAI from an open source product into an open source project. This is in line with OMII-UK’s goal to promote software sustainability, and will guarantee that the lifetime of the OGSA-DAI product exists outwith any single institution or funding stream.

GSoC 2009 Update

April 21st, 2009

Google have now publicly announced the list of accepted project for each of the mentoring organisations participating in the Google Summer of Code (GSoC) 2009 Programme. This year OMII-UK was allocated five studentships - one down on last year. Overall, although we got fewer applications compared to last year these, in general, were of a higher quality. The successful OMII-UK GSoC projects can broadly be classified as  corresponding to two OGSA-DAI based projects, two projects based on SAGA (Simple API for Grid Applications) and one on RAPID. The OGSA-DAI based projects will continue to develop the JDBC driver for OGSA-DAI and will look at adaptive cost Estimation Techniques for the new version of OGSA-DAI DQP that is being developed. More details of these project proposals is available here.  The students do not officially start working until May 23rd - in the meantime a community bonding period is taking place.

I would like to personally thank all those students that took the effort and time to apply for an OMII-UK based project whether successful or not, to the mentors that took the time to review these applications and, most of all, to Google for providing the Google Summer of Code initiative.

How to configure OGSA-DAI 3.0/1 GT with transport-level security

March 26th, 2009

After one of our users encountered a number of problems trying to deploy OGSA-DAI 3 GT on Tomcat with transport-level security enabled I tried to do it myself. The problem with configuring GT security is that there are a number of options available at each stage e.g. transport-level security or message-level security, encryption or integrity etc. So this is just one path through these

GT Errors

March 25th, 2009

Mike found a handy list of GT errors some of which also apply to the OGSA-DAI GT flavour. This includes those much loved:

java.lang.NoSuchFieldError: DOCUMENT

and

org.globus.wsrf. InvalidResourceKeyException: Argument key is null
/ Resource key is missing

If you are encountering these types of the error the following link might be useful:

GSoC Student Applications Now Open

March 24th, 2009

Google Summer of Code 2009 LogoThe Google Summer of Code (GSoC) 2009 application process is now open for student applications:

You will first need to register as a student (make sure you have  read the user guide first). Then you will be able to submit your proposal for an OGSA-DAI project (under the OMII-UK mentoring organisation) though it might be best if you get in touch with us first if you are thinking of proposing an OGSA-DAI based project. However, there are other possibilities - check out the OMII-UK ideas page and, of course, there are plenty of other open source orgainsations you can choose from but you have until the 3rd of April to get your application ready and submitted if you want to be considered. Good luck!!
